ABOUT THE SOCIETYInverell Herpetological Society was established by a group of dedicated local reptile keepers from throughout the town and surrounding area in the autumn of 2006. The first meeting was held in February 2006 at the Girl Guide hall in Campbell Street Inverell, where meetings still take place on the second Friday of each month, commencing at 7.00pm. Meetings are social and informative and anyone with an interest on the subject are most welcome to attend. Following our initial gathering, it was decided, for several reason to incorporate ourselves as a society and the process was put in motion. A steering committee was elected from those present at the meeting, annual fees and membership types were introduced and our constitution finalised. The principle factors in the decision to form the society were the lack of information in the area for those people with an interest in our native herpetofauna as well as the inaccessibility of specimens and husbandry products. Since forming the society it has been realised that despite the attempt by various groups, including film and documentary makers, to educate the Australian public on the subject of snake safety and awareness (including correct identification) it has had limited results. Not only do our members have an interest in keeping private collections of reptiles, we also play an active role in educating the public regarding "snake safety and awareness" and encourage responsible conservation practices to protect our precious and unique native fauna and flora. The society also anticipates undertaking an active role in conservation practices regarding reptiles and hgs throughout the district, by participating in field research to identify local species and any present or prospective population threats that may exist. So, now that you know a little more about us if have an interest in knowing more about the hobby, you are more than welcome to attend our next meeting at the Inverell Guide Wall on FRIDAY 1lth March 2007 (6.30pm for a 7.00pm start) or contact our president. Regards, George White (president)
